Richmond Tea Party says city audit is harassment

By Steve Szkotak November 29, 2011 7:22 am

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – The Richmond Tea Party said an audit by the city is retaliation for the conservative group seeking refunds for rally permits and fees, arguing that Occupy Richmond activists have not been charged anything for the same activities.

The audit is outlined in a Nov. 14 letter by the city’s Department of Finance. It states the group has not paid admissions, lodging or meals taxes collected by the city, so is now being audited.

The tea party said Monday it has never charged an admission or offered meals or lodging associated with its rallies.

“Every month the forms are appropriately filled with zeros,” Tea Party spokeswoman Colleen Owens wrote in an email.

The group said the audit is punishment for its complaint that the city had charged it $8,500 for permits and other costs for rallies, while Occupy Richmond activists have not been assessed any costs related to their former occupation of a city-owned plaza.

The tea party sought a refund, unsuccessfully, from the city.

“This audit is an obvious attempt to intimidate and harass us for standing up against the unfair treatment and discrimination against our Tea Party,” Owens wrote in the email.

A spokeswoman for Mayor Dwight C. Jones said his office wasn’t aware of the audit and that the Richmond Tea Party is among 700 businesses that were not compliant with admissions, meals or lodging excise taxes, known collectively as ALM.

“The Richmond Tea Party did not file any of the required ALM monthly returns during 2010 and had only filed January and February 2011 when this account was selected for audit review,” Tammy D. Hawley wrote in an email to The Associated Press.

Since then, it has filed returns for 2011 but not 2010, Hawley said.

Owens said the tea party treasurer had been told by a city official he would comply with the 2010 filings. The official said not to bother because the group would have no reports of tax activity sought by the city, she said.

“We’ll be glad to fill out the forms but all the forms will be zero,” Owens said in an interview. “We’ve never owed any taxes.”

The Richmond Tea Party has publicly criticized Jones and his administration for favoring Occupy Richmond activists. They have cited his public comments stating his sympathies with the anti-Wall Street movement as a child of the civil rights movement and its protests.

The Tea Party said Jones’ administration sought permit fees, portable toilets and other demands for their events, but had given Occupy Richmond a free pass.

The Occupy movement pitched tents for two weeks on a city-owned plaza until police cleared them out in a pre-dawn sweep on Oct. 31.

The occupation costs the city $17,640, primarily for police and public works overtime costs, according to a city accounting based on a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the AP.

The costs did not include a subsequent occupation on the lawn of the mayor’s neighbor.

Parties Contest Election-Monitoring Techniques

Not only are Americans divided over the presidential candidates, they appear to be divided over how people should vote for those candidates.

Texas tea partyers have launched an election-monitoring effort designed to weed out voter fraud. Civil rights groups call it an elaborate intimidation scheme targeting minority voters.

“They’re trying to put in place a solution for a problem that doesn’t exist,” said Judith Browne-Dianis, co-director of the Advancement Project, adding that voter fraud is uncommon.

Still, the tea party poll watchers point to errors in voter-registration rolls as proof that the system is broken. By monitoring the elections, they seek to prevent double voting, voter impersonation and ballots cast by illegal residents.

“Our goal is to bring focus to a national call for election integrity,” said Catherine Engelbrecht, president of the King Street Patriots, the group behind the poll-watching effort.

The group has raised $140,000 and has already provided election-monitoring training to tea party groups in 30 states through its “True the Vote” project. Engelbrecht said she has a lofty goal to train 1 million people by next year’s elections. Read More >>>

Obama Has Halved Spending on Border Fencing, Infrastructure, Technology–Leaving 1,300 Miles of Mexico Border Unfenced

By Edwin Mora

November 28, 2011

(CNSNews.com) – The Obama administration has slashed spending on border fencing, infrastructure and technology, cutting it by more than half since it peaked under President George W. Bush in fiscal 2008, according to a Government Accountability Office report.

In 2008, according to GAO, the federal government spent more than $1.3 billion on border security fencing, infrastructure and technology. In 2011, it spend $573 million.Meanwhile, Customs and Border Protection has said that as of June it had fenced only 649 miles of the nearly 1,954-mile-long U.S.-Mexico border–leaving more than 1,300 miles of that border unfenced.

The November 2011 GAO report refers to this category of federal spending by the acronym BSFIT.

“Over $4.7 billion has been appropriated for BSFIT activities from fiscal years 2007 through 2011,” it says.

The report breaks the figure down for the five consecutive fiscal years (the 12-month period from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30 of the following year) – $1.188 billion for FY2007, $1.303 billion for FY2008, $845 million for FY2009, $800 million for FY2010 and $573 million for FY2011.

Over that period, the annual appropriations for border security therefore peaked in FY2008 under President Bush and declined to its lowest level in FY2011 under President Obama.  Read More >>>

Has anything changed?

by Stewart Topping
During the last 3 years we have had change. But the wrong kind of change!  More unemployedhigher prices with food, clothing, Insurance and Gas. It is very difficult to save anymore, most are just getting by.EPA …. Has gone over board with regulating Power companies which will cost us more for our electric power. I hear they are going to regulate dust.

Board of Labor Relations …. Tell Companies they can not relocate because the new State has a right to work law. This is protection of labor Unions.
  • Businesses … More regulations, more taxes, more requirements for health care. Very difficult to hire new people.
  • Unemployment …. Nationally 9.7%, but unemployed is actually 16.6%
  • Taxes … You know the rich and the middle class will pay more.
Housing
  1. 20% of mortgages are underwater (homeowners owe more than the value of their home).
  2. Banks own 500,000 houses and are in the process of foreclosing on 4 million more.
  3. Homeowner’s equity as a share of home values is now 38.6%, down from 59.7% in 2005.

Politicians just don’t tell the truth anymore, they tell you what they think you want to hear. It is hard to know what the real problems are in our country with all the lies and cover up’s. But We should recycle the legislators in the house and senate with people that will put the American people first.  I would leave the Tea Party legislators that were elected in the last election, they have done well but they need a Senate and White House that would help them get things done.  Here is an article that says that even the liberal Media and the Congressional Black Caucus are turning on President Obama.  He may not have any friends left.

The supercommittee failed because Democrats insisted on $1 trillion in new taxes

By Jon Kyl, Rob Portman, Pat Toomey, Jeb Hensarling, Fred Upton and Dave Camp, Published: November 25

We do not choose to add more to the blame game for failure of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction , but one Democratic talking point needs debunking: that the talks failed because of Republicans’ attachment to the Bush tax cuts. The untold story of the negotiations is the significance of the Republican offer of fundamental tax reform. It is critical to understand the interplay between the proposal(dubbed the “Toomey plan”) and existing tax law.

First, a bit of history. The 2001 and 2003 changes to the tax code reduced marginal rates for all taxpayers as well as the rates for capital gains, dividends and the death tax. For technical reasons, all of these provisions expire at the end of next year — meaning that if Congress does not act, Americans will face the largest tax increase in our history.

This prospect has put a wet blanket over job creation and economic recovery. It would be the wrong medicine for our ailing economy. As President Obama has famously said, “You don’t raise taxes in a recession.” Partially to avoid this result, but also to try to meet the Democrats partway — given their absolute insistence on big, new tax increases — Republicans offered a proposal that would have both reformed the current code and produced significant new tax revenue.  Read More >>>

We’re No Longer Alone: Obama’s Tax Lies Refuted Throughout Media

Posted by Conservative Byte

Do you remember (it wasn’t that long ago) when Barack Obama told the “rich fat cats” on Wall Street…? This is back during the days of the AIG and other Wall Street bonus scandal, and you had all of Obama’s ACORN-type people showing up on the front yards of AIG homes to protest their bonuses. Remember Obama telling the AIG people and all the other, quote, unquote, “rich fat cats” on Wall Street that he was the only thing standing between them and the pitchforks? Well, guess what? Now it is only Obama’s skin color that is standing between him and the pitchforks of the Congressional Black Caucus. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus are openly admitting: If this were a white president who had done this economically to their constituents, they would be marching on the White House.
The only reason they’re not is because of the color of his skin. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus have said this. Now, the columnist in Chicago, the Chicago Tribune, is a guy named Steve Chapman, Steven Chapman, and the last column that he wrote about Obama was back in August. Back in August he said that Obama had accomplished undeniably historic, even great things. He killed Osama, he’s getting us out of Iraq, he passed Obamacare. The only problem was the economy made him look bad. He said the economy even made Ronald Reagan look bad. Suddenly Chapman’s changed his tune. He thinks Obama has to go, in just a month’s time. Steven Chapman has changed his tune. Obama has to go for the good of the party, for the good of liberalism. That is what is at stake.  Read more >>>>

Nearly Half of U.S. Lives in Household Receiving Government Benefit

By Sara MurrayFamilies were more dependent on government programs than ever last year.

Nearly half, 48.5%, of the population lived in a household that received some type of government benefit in the first quarter of 2010, according to Census data. Those numbers have risen since the middle of the recession when 44.4% lived households receiving benefits in the third quarter of 2008.

The share of people relying on government benefits has reached a historic high, in large part from the deep recession and meager recovery, but also because of the expansion of government programs over the years. (See a timeline on the history of government benefits programs here.)
Means-tested programs, designed to help the needy, accounted for the largest share of recipients last year. Some 34.2% of Americans lived in a household that received benefits such as food stamps, subsidized housing, cash welfare or Medicaid (the federal-state health care program for the poor).
Another 14.5% lived in homes where someone was on Medicare (the health care program for the elderly). Nearly 16% lived in households receiving Social Security.
High unemployment and increased reliance on government programs has also shrunk the nation’s share of taxpayers. Some 46.4% of households will pay no federal income tax this year, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center. That’s up from 39.9% in 2007, the year Read More from WSJ Blog >>>

This Teacher is a Genius

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama’s socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer. The professor then said, “OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama’s plan”.
All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D!?  No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

Could not be any simpler than that. (Please pass this on)

Remember, there is a test coming up. The 2012 elections.

Is the ACLU Friend or Foe?

My thoughts on it!     by  Stewart Topping

Recently the ACLU filed Lawsuit’s to protect the Occupiers in Minneapolis and Manhattan.  Most American’s believe the ACLU has been helping the Country protect our Constitution.  The real true is they have their own agenda.  The ACLU started as a Communism organization in 1931 and they have not changed.

The ACLU goal is Communism and the occupiers want the same thing.  What has the Left been saying for the last 3 years and our own President Obama,  “Share the Wealth“.   Why would a group like the ACLU help the occupiers if they didn’t have the objective.  I have posted  2 articles on Law Suits and 1 on the ACLU history.  [hr]

1.  Lawsuit filed by ACLU to protect Occupy Minneapolis

St. Paul, MN – The American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota filed a lawsuit against Hennepin County, Nov. 22 on behalf of Occupy Minneapolis. The lawsuit argues that the county’s new restrictions on the OccupyMPLS unconstitutionally restrict the demonstrators’ free speech rights. OccupyMPLS has been continuously occupying the Hennepin County Government Center Plaza, since renamed People’s Plaza, since Oct. 7 to express their frustration with the growing economic and political inequities in this country.

When the cops raided Zuccotti Park, lawyers for Occupy Wall Street woke up a judge with a civil liberties background and asked for help.  Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Lucy Billings signed an early-morning order temporarily barring cops from keeping protesters and tents out of Zuccotti Park.

3.  The ACLU’s shocking legacy

Posted: August 25, 20 By Alan Sears © 2011 WND

Editor’s note: Be sure to get your copy of Alan Sears’ powerful new book, “The ACLU vs. America: Exposing the Agenda to Redefine Moral Values .”

One of the great myths of the 20th – and now 21st – century is the belief that the American Civil Liberties Union was an organization that had a noble beginning, but somehow strayed off course.

That myth is untrue. The ACLU set a course to destroy America – her freedom and her values – right from the start.

From its very beginning, the ACLU had strong socialist and communist ties. As early as 1931, the U.S. Congress was alarmed by the ACLU’s devotion to communism. A report by the Special House Committee to Investigate Communist Activities stated

The American Civil Liberties Union is closely affiliated with the communist movement in the United States, and fully 90 percent of its efforts are on behalf of communists who have come into conflict with the law. It claims to stand for free speech, free press and free assembly, but it is quite apparent that the main function of the ACLU is an attempt to protect the communists.

Planned Parenthood passes out tips to promote abortion at Thanksgiving

POSTED AT 4:00 PM ON NOVEMBER 24, 2011 BY TINA KORBE

Often, the holidays are far pleasanter in the abstract than they are in the particulars. Warm intentions to celebrate family with good food, generous attitudes and grateful hearts often give way to heated religious or political debates at one extreme or stiff politeness at the other. It’s tempting to develop a strategy to avoid awkward confrontations — and, on some level, leftover rules of etiquette do compel us to avoid controversial topics when we’re talking to those with whom we don’t have a particularly regular relationship — but, on Thanksgiving, as on any other day, it’s worth it to firmly but graciously defend first principles … especially when opponents of those principles come to the dinner table prepared to muddy the water, obscure the issue and cast you as the intolerant extremist. And, according to LifeNews.com, the New York affiliate of Planned Parenthood has passed out tips to help abortion advocates do just that:

As is expected, the tips Planned Parenthood of New York City gives its supporters involve covering up promotion of abortion with terms like “reproductive health” and focusing on women’s rights. …

“The holidays are upon us! Going home or getting together with relatives for the holidays is always a stressful time, but if your family members are the type who regularly protest outside the local Planned Parenthood, you know that this holiday is going to be a doozy,” PPNYC complains. “Luckily, we have some tips for surviving those awkward conversations. So read on, and bring some diplomacy and understanding to the table along with that pumpkin pie.”

Planned Parenthood also encourages people to push abortions of disabled unborn children on their Thanksgiving guests, by telling them, “We can try to imagine the heartbreak of a family when they get the news that a test has shown there is something wrong with their baby.”

The tips include “Avoid bumper speak talk” and “Remember the big picture” and abortion activists are told, “Debating when life begins or whether or not abortion is federally funded may get you nowhere. Instead focus on your shared values and the big picture—for instance, talk about how you believe everyone should be able to afford to go to the doctor, or how the decision about when and whether to become a parent is a personal one.”

As LifeNews’ Steven Ertelt summarizes, “Anything to ignore the unborn baby.”

If a PPNYC-prepped pro-choicer wants to talk abortion with me today, I’ll be glad to keep it positive and personal, too: Among all the blessings I’m counting this Thanksgiving, I’m first and foremost just so glad and grateful that my parents weren’t more concerned with reproductive health or women’s rights than they were with welcoming me into the world with open arms. And that’s exactly what I wish for every unborn baby — a warm welcome, whether into the home of the biological parent or into the home of an eager adoptive parent. We do have choices — both before and after pregnancy. Abortion need not be one of them.
